How To Get Rid Of Peach Fuzz

Q: How can I get rid of the peach fuzz on my face? Every time I apply my foundation, it's visible on the hairs on my cheeks and it's embarrassing.

A: To make your peach fuzz disappear, you have a five options, per Dr. Neal Schultz, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist in NYC:

1) use a chemical method aka a facial depilatory, like Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo Kit, that will burn the hair (not your skin) off at the root;

2) shave it off — don't worry, this technique won't make you grow a beard;

3) tweeze it, but know that it might cause ingrowns, which aren't cute on your bikini line and definitely aren't cute on your face either;

4) use a facial trimmer, like Panasonic Ladies' Facial Trimmer, that gently shortens the peach fuzz, so it's less visible when you're wearing makeup; and

5) a prescription cream called Vaniqa, which is the first FDA-approved facial hair cream proven to reduce the growth of unwanted facial hair in women.

"Lasers won't help in this case because they only work if the color of hair is darker than the color of the skin, and in this instance, that's probably not the case," he says. So, your best bet is trying out and becoming comfortable with one of the options above.

Q: My nails always get yellow stains on them after I remove dark polish. How can I prevent this and make them white again?

A: The reason stains occur on nails in the first place is due to the darker pigments in deeply colored nail polishes that are left on too long without a base coat. "So, the one thing is you should always use when applying nail polish, light or dark, is a base coat," says Fleury Rose, nail pro and Illamasqua nail ambassador. "It creates a barrier that protects the nailbed from staining and also gives your colored polish something to adhere to, so that it stays on longer." Rose suggests the base coat from Illamasqua that also smoothes out any ridges.

To avoid staining, Rose also recommends that when you're removing dark nail polish, don't apply nail polish remover to a tissue and rub in a circle as, "that only pushes the polish into the nail even more. Instead, soak a cotton ball in remover, let it sit on the nailbed for a few seconds, and then apply pressure and drag it toward the tip of your nail, wiping your nail clean of any polish and staining."

If you already have a yellow tinge to your nail, lightly buff it using a the soft side of a buffer block, and then squeeze lemon juice onto a cotton pad and rub it over your nail for five to ten seconds. You can also mix two tablespoons of lemon juice into a bowl of warm water and soak your nails to remove any staining. Repeat either method once a week until the yellow-ish tint is gone.

Q: I can't always get to my stylist in time for a haircut, but I can't stand my split ends. Are there any tips for giving yourself a trim?

A: Yes. "The best way to give yourself a trim at home is to first blow out your hair, so that it's smooth and straight," says Tommy Buckett, a stylist for Garnier Fructis at Serge Normant Salon in NYC. "That way you can see the shape of the cut. Then, using styling shears, cut into your hair, snipping off any split ends. Hold the scissors vertically, creating a jagged edge instead of a blunt one. This way you won't change the original shape that your stylist gave you at your last appointment, but you will be able to finally get rid of any split hairs."
